A winter painting of an apple orchard near Sibiu — the bare trees casting blue shadows on the snow, the sky the particular grey-white of overcast winter in Transylvania. The painting is made at a scale that allows the full rhythm of the orchard's spatial organisation to be felt.
The blue of the shadows was the primary colour decision. It needed to be present enough to register as a chromatic note while staying cool enough to read as shadow rather than local colour. Many preparatory studies established the range before the canvas was begun.
About the artist
Roxana Enescu's paintings come from an unhurried, observational practice built over many years in the field and in the studio. She is equally at ease with landscape and portraiture, and the transition between the two modes feels natural because both are, fundamentally, about the quality of light on a surface — whether that surface is a hillside or a face.
She is based in Sibiu and paints regularly in the Olt Valley and the Apuseni mountains. She exhibits annually in Sibiu and Bucharest, and her work is held in private collections across Romania and Germany. She accepts commissions for both landscapes and portraits.
