A mixed media work in which encaustic wax and linen thread are applied to the canvas surface before the painted layers, so that the underlying material structure is always present beneath the paint — sometimes visible through it, sometimes creating ridges that the paint pools around.
The abstract composition emerged from the material process rather than being planned. The thread, embedded at different angles and depths, creates a directional energy in the surface that influences how the wax and paint are read. The work repays close physical examination.
About the artist
Roxana Enescu's paintings come from an unhurried, observational practice built over many years in the field and in the studio. She is equally at ease with landscape and portraiture, and the transition between the two modes feels natural because both are, fundamentally, about the quality of light on a surface — whether that surface is a hillside or a face.
She is based in Sibiu and paints regularly in the Olt Valley and the Apuseni mountains. She exhibits annually in Sibiu and Bucharest, and her work is held in private collections across Romania and Germany. She accepts commissions for both landscapes and portraits.
