The horizon occupies exactly the golden section of the canvas. Everything above it is one field of colour, everything below another, and the relationship between those two fields — their relative values, temperatures, and weights — is the only subject.
Many canvases were prepared and abandoned before this composition settled. The lower field is slightly warmer than it first appears, a decision made after observing the painting in different light conditions across several days.
About the artist
Mihai Ionescu builds his paintings through layering and erasure — broad washes that are scraped back, overpainted, and reworked until the surface holds the memory of every decision made along the way. Colour is his primary material, and he treats it as something with physical and emotional weight, not merely decoration.
He has shown work in group exhibitions in Romania, France, and Germany, and maintains a studio practice in Bucharest. He does not currently accept commissions but is available for studio visits by arrangement.
