A single face shown from multiple angles simultaneously — left cheek and right profile visible at the same moment, the forehead rendered from above while the jaw is seen straight on. This is not distortion but a different kind of honesty about how we perceive a familiar face.
The earth palette was chosen deliberately, limiting the chromatic range so that the structural decisions carry the full weight of the painting. The near-neutral background prevents it competing with the geometric complexity of the face.
About the artist
Mihai Ionescu builds his paintings through layering and erasure — broad washes that are scraped back, overpainted, and reworked until the surface holds the memory of every decision made along the way. Colour is his primary material, and he treats it as something with physical and emotional weight, not merely decoration.
He has shown work in group exhibitions in Romania, France, and Germany, and maintains a studio practice in Bucharest. He does not currently accept commissions but is available for studio visits by arrangement.
