A watercolour of the Danube Delta at low water, when the tidal flat extends to the horizon and the only vertical element is the distant reed bed. The space is vast and the marks required to describe it are surprisingly few — the difficulty is knowing when to stop.
Made on location over ninety minutes. The sky was painted first and left alone, establishing the key for everything that followed. The flat was worked in washes that dried to a granular texture, the paper's surface contributing a quality no studio work can replicate.
About the artist
Bogdan Gherasim trained as a sculptor before returning to painting in his late twenties, and that earlier practice still informs how he approaches the picture plane — as a space with genuine depth and physical presence, not merely a surface for marks. His cubist works break the body into structural planes; his minimalist paintings reduce the field to its essential elements.
He has exhibited in Romania, France, and Germany. He does not accept commissions. His studio is in Brașov, where he also runs occasional workshops in figure drawing for intermediate painters.
