The first in an ongoing series that uses a single mid-grey as the only permitted colour — what changes between works is only the texture and direction of the marks. This canvas is the most resolved: the gesture is barely visible, the surface close to flat, the painting approaching but never reaching the condition of an object.
What keeps it a painting rather than a monochrome object is the barely perceptible variation in the grey — the way light catches differently across the surface, producing a very quiet spatial ambiguity that disappears from some angles and is unavoidable from others.
About the artist
Bogdan Gherasim trained as a sculptor before returning to painting in his late twenties, and that earlier practice still informs how he approaches the picture plane — as a space with genuine depth and physical presence, not merely a surface for marks. His cubist works break the body into structural planes; his minimalist paintings reduce the field to its essential elements.
He has exhibited in Romania, France, and Germany. He does not accept commissions. His studio is in Brașov, where he also runs occasional workshops in figure drawing for intermediate painters.
