A gouache study of the artist's garden made over a single afternoon, capturing the dense overlapping of forms that a productive garden presents — leaf behind stem behind flower, each plane competing for the same light. Gouache suits this kind of close observation better than oil.
The opacity of the medium allowed corrections to be made cleanly, covering passages that had been overstated and reworking them with fresh colour. The sky, kept to a minimal wash at the top edge, was the last decision made.
About the artist
Elena Constantin divides her practice between large-scale oil paintings and smaller illustrative works on paper. She is drawn to the everyday poetry of domestic and garden scenes, approaching each subject with a patience that transforms familiar objects into sustained visual investigations.
Based in Cluj-Napoca, Elena balances teaching at the local art school with her own studio practice. She accepts commissions for portraits and interiors, and has a particular interest in working with clients to paint spaces that hold personal significance.
