A gouache study of a single fig branch with two nearly ripe figs — the subject chosen for the particular grey-green of the fig leaf and the way it sits against the warm mauve of the almost-ripe fruit. Made from a branch cut from the garden, the study was completed before the branch began to wilt.
The leaves were painted first, establishing the dominant colour temperature of the composition, and the figs were worked up separately before being placed in relation to the leaves. The white paper was left completely active in three small areas of highlight.
About the artist
Adrian Cosma's realist paintings document the spaces where ordinary life happens — train station waiting rooms, market halls, the corridors of old apartment buildings — rendered with documentary fidelity that preserves the specific texture and light of each place. He has spent years building a visual archive of a Romania that is changing quickly.
His cubist work develops from the same subjects but approaches them through fragmentation rather than fidelity. The two modes are not in tension, he argues, because both are faithful to experience — the realist painting records what the camera sees, while the cubist painting records what memory reconstructs. He is based in Arad and accepts commissions.
